Northeastern University is committed to the professional growth and advancement of its faculty. The demands on tenure track faculty in research, teaching, and service are significant. The faculty mentoring program consists of a combination of university wide, college, and department specific activities designed to guide faculty through the tenure track process.

CAREER Proposal Writing Workshop was RESCHEDULED for May 1 9:00 am - 1:00 pm in 431 Stearns. Topics include: elements of a successful proposal, integrating research and education, and responding to reviewer comments. The 2008 agenda is available.

Wine and Cheese Reception as an end of the semester get together. April 16 from 4pm - 5:30 pm in 440 Egan.

Tenure and Promotion: The 3rd Year Review Wednesday March 19 from noon - 1:30 pm in 340 Egan. A workshop for faculty in their first few years at Northeastern and before their mid term review.

Tenure and Promotion: The Process Thursday February 28 from 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm in 340 Egan. For faculty who intend to be begin the process for tenure evaluation Fall 2008.

Faculty Orientation (Fall 2007)

New Faculty Orientation was held on August 29th, 2007 for new tenured and tenure - track faculty joining Northeastern University. See archive. The orientation was packed with information about university benefits, teaching resources, experiential learning, Northeastern priorities and policies, research, and tenure. New faculty met with key university administrators and students. The orientation was held in the Pavilion at the Alumni Center (6th floor), 716 Columbus Avenue. ANNOUNCEMENTS

A 2007 Workshop on Preparing a NSF CAREER Proposal will be held on May 10, 2007 (440 Egan) to help faculty learn about the National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Program and to help them write successful Career proposals. To help everyone organize their day, we will do our best to keep to the times in the Agenda. Please RSVP to Christine Willis (x2170) by Wednesday May. 9th. The workshop is archived.

Celebrate the 2006 - 2007 academic year with friends and colleagues from across the university. This event (in place of the lunch originally scheduled for 4/19) will be held on Monday April 23 from 4 - 6pm in the Pavilion at the new Alumni Center / Faculty Club on the 6th floor of Columbus Place.

Spring 2007 Tenure & Promotion Workshop appropriate for faculty in the beginning of their tenure track will be held in 206 Egan from 11:45 - 1:30 on Wednesday March 21, 2007. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP to Christine Willis (x2170). A workshop for faculty who intend to be begin the process for tenure evaluation within a few years will be held Fall 2007.

Fall Luncheon to be held on Wednesday Oct. 25th at noon in the alumni center (next door to the new faculty center). The program focus will be on research support services. There will be an opportunity for a dialogue with individuals from Research Development, Foundations and Corporations, Sponsored Projects, and Academic Computing. 2006 - 2007 Faculty Mentoring Events The schedule of events includes a first year faculty breakfast, a fall luncheon focusing on research development and support, tenure and promotion workshops, Brown Bag lunches, and opportunities to socialize. Note that the Spring T&P workshop has been moved to March 21 and the End of Year Luncheon originally scheduled for April 19th will be a reception on a date to be announced. Mark your calendars.

Senior Faculty Advisors, a panel of individuals with extensive administrative experience, are available as a resource for faculty. Senior Faculty Advisors have been selected based on their administrative experience, confidentiality, and integrity.

ONTrack is an e-bulletin sent to tenure track faculty, faculty mentors, department chairs, and deans containing information about resources for faculty development and opportunities for scholarship and effective teaching.

Engineering Dean Soyster wrote a letter that appeared in the December 2005 American Society of Engineering Education PRISM on the importance of developing community and addressing barriers to faculty advancement.

Antonio Ocampo-Guzman, a new faculty in the Department of Theatre, will direct a production of Tennessee William's last play -- The One Exception -- for the 2nd Annual Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theatre Festival. Congratulations to Professors Purnima Ratilal and Nian Sun both of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department who have received the prestigious Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Awards in 2007. Congratulations to both!

Congratulations to Professor Becky Rosengaus (Biology) who received a Presidental Early Career Award from President Bush at the White House on July 26, 2006. Less then 1% of faculty who apply for the prestigous NSF Career Award receive Presidential recognition. More information about this great honor to Becky and to Northeastern is available at the Northeastern press release. Professor Timothy Bickmore (Computer and Information Science) has been awarded a 2006 NSF CAREER Development Award entitled CAREER: A Virtual Laboratory for Studying Long-Term Human-Computer Relationships.

Professor Catherine Dolan is working on a National Science Foundation research grant on Tracing the Socioeconomic Effects of Fair Trade in Kenya.

Faculty Mentor Professor James Fox is a regular columnist for the Boston Herlad, writing bi-weekly on the op-ed page about crime and justice issues.

Faculty Mentor Professor Carey Rappaport has been inducted as a Fellow into the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

The world premiere of Music Professor Ronald Bruce Smith's String Quartet no. 2 will take place on May 24, 25, 26 and 28, 2006 in performances by the Del Sol String Quartet in the San Francisco Bay Area ( Del Sol ).

Congratulations to Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Mehrdad Sasani who received a 2006 NSF Career grant and additional NSF grant related to study the progressive collapse of structures. More>>

Congratulations to Professors Rebeca Rosengaus, Timothy Bickmore, Professor Mehrdad Sasani and other Northeastern Tenure Track Faculty who have received the NSF Career Award and the NIH Career Award. Professor Rosengaus seeks better forms of insect control through termite research. More>>
